Would you trust a 9 year-old to cut your hair?
During October and November, children from Walkergate Primary School are working with world renowned Canadian arts company Mammalian Diving Reflex and North East hairstylists to develop their hairdressing skills. By the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November, they will be ready to offer free haircuts for the public at Saks salon in town.
Then, as part of the Wunderbar Grand Chaser the young stylists will take to the stage and show off the extent of their skills. Be prepared for a spectacle!
The children will also run a Hot Chocolate Stall on 7th and 8th November for those too vain to take to the scissors, but curious enough to watch in the chills of November. Proceeds from the sale of hot chocolate will be donated to a charity chosen by the students. The Hot Chocolate Stall is generously sponsored by the farmer-owned Fairtrade company Divine Chocolate Ltd, for whom the children will become Dubble Agents, learning and spreading the word about Fairtrade and the Dubble mission.
Haircuts by Children playfully engages with the empowerment of children, with trust in the younger generation, and with the thrills and chills of vanity.
Called the “Best of New York City’s Performa” by ArtINFO, Haircuts by Children has been presented at festivals around the world including the Milk International Children’s Festival for the Arts in Toronto, Fierce’s 10 th anniversary festival in 2007 and the 2008 Sydney Festival.
Co-presented by Wunderbar and Juice - NewcastleGateshead’s Festival for Children and Young People
Haircuts by Children is kindly supported by Divine Chocolate Ltd and Dubble, and Saks Hair Salon
